Boxing Ring Thats Bringing Boxing Back!

The popularity of boxing is growing rapidly. Here in the UK, health club operators are experiencing unprecedented demand for boxing inspired training and classes and more and more are taking advantage of the trend.

Fitness First launched its first dedicated boxing environment in the UK at its Gorton club in Gorton, Manchester last year. Branded First Box, the space features a boxing ring with a boxing station on each of the four corner posts that can be used from inside or outside of the ring. The concept has been so well received by members that the company is introducing First Box to other Fitness First sites around the country.

Other operators, both chains and independents, are following suit as they realise that they can breathe new life into under-utilised areas of the club with boxing equipment. For example, the UK chain Cannons has converted an exercise studio into a boxing zone at its club in central London to meet increasing demand for the sport from stressed city workers.

Depending on the space available, boxing areas can comprise full and half sized rings complete with corner punch bags, or a 3-in-1 boxing station combining a punch bag, speed ball and floor to ceiling ball allowing three users to train at one time, or simply some free-standing punch bags, gloves and skipping ropes. Add some exercise mats, a stretch area and some stability products and you've got an exciting boxing space. Kit like this allows members to experience the thrill of ‘being in a ring' and they are guaranteed an intense and effective work out at the same time.

In other clubs, boxing is very much taking centre stage and providing the main focus of the gym. This arrangement allows other members to enjoy the theatre of the sport while working out and can help to attract those new to boxing.

Wherever they are located in the club, these training areas can be used by individual members, personal trainers and small group exercisers providing a greater variety of exercise options in the club. Many operators begin by introducing classes for beginners and intermediates and gradually add more advanced classes to the timetable. They also offer women only sessions and classes for seniors, as well as workshops demonstrating boxing techniques.

Ensuring staff are properly trained is crucial and adds further credibility to a club's boxing offer. In the UK, we offer OUTBOXTM, the only boxing qualification for health and fitness staff to be accredited by the British Boxing Board of Control. It is an incredibly thorough and progressive course, so that even those with little or no prior knowledge of boxing training can safely and competently supervise the boxing area.

Boxing is definitely back, are you ready to take up the challenge?
